Mace's planning expertise met the challenge of creating a cutting edge IMAX cinema in the centre of a busy London roundabout for the British Film Institute.
The Imax Cinema in Waterloo represents the very latest in motion film technology. Mace was initially engaged to provide construction consultancy to demonstrate how the project would be constructed in such a difficult location. In addition to its being surrounded by traffic the site is also above London Underground lines which run just 4 metres below the ground.
Located in the centre of the Bull Ring roundabout, adjacent to Waterloo Station, a clever and integrated approach was required in order to successfully deliver the project. By working closely with the local authority, traffic police and surrounding neighbours, Mace developed a construction strategy which later proved to be very successful when Mace was also appointed as construction manager on the project.
Funded by a grant from the National Lottery, the cinema is today part of the South Bank's cultural renaissance and its 20m high screen is a hit with Londoners.
