Museum of Liverpool | Mace
The old Museum of Liverpool Life was inadequate to accommodate its more than 300,000 visitors annually. Its replacement, the Museum of Liverpool, is the largest new-build national museum in the UK for over a century, and is dedicated to telling the story of the city's development from pre-history to the present day. The new building provides 8,000 square metres of public space over three floors, enabling the display of more than 6,000 museum objects, many of which have never previously been on display. Mace was approached by the client, National Museums of Liverpool, to join the project as client advisor once construction was already underway; however, Mace's impact was such that the initial project management support, base build advice and design coordination role was extended to cover project management of the build.
Under the original appointment on the £41m base build contract, Mace provided strategic advice, facilitating communication between the client and the design team, programme support and analysis, assisting in the management of the design process, and implementing more effective processes and procedures including change control and risk. The subsequent appointment covered project management of the build to completion and handover. The contemporary structure was designed and built to incorporate environmental and sustainability features that would result in a BREEAM "very good" rating and set the bar for other new-build national museums.
