Mace wins appointment on £36m Basildon sporting village

Mace Group has been appointed as project manager and client representative on the £36m Basildon sporting village by clients Basildon District Council and Essex County Council.
Basildon sporting village is intended to be the best sports facility in the East of England, providing premium, affordable and accessible sports, leisure and education facilities. Situated in the heart of Basildon, the centre will become a sporting hub for the community catering for the region's casual and elite athletes.
The sporting village will incorporate a 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool and training pool with spectator accommodation for 300 people, an eight court multi-purpose sports hall with retractable seating for 480 spectators, a gymnastics centre, multi-purpose studio and health and fitness suite including changing rooms for indoor and outdoor activities and a climbing wall.
Outdoor facilities include six floodlit 5-a-side artificial turf soccer pitches, a British Athletics Association grade 18-lane track, 750-seater covered terrace, netball courts and changing facilities.
The commission was won through Smarte East, the East of England procurement vehicle created by Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk county councils.
The facility is scheduled to open in April 2011 and may be used as a training camp for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
