Mace Group has secured the role of delivery partner on the £600m transformation of Birmingham New Street Station and its environs, a project known as "New Street Gateway". Network Rail has just unveiled the visionary design for the new station at a public launch which included 100+ journalists and showcased a fly-through of the design.
Developed by Network Rail, Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham City Council and Centro (The West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive), the New Street Gateway scheme will see the current 1960s station transformed into a modern 21st century transport hub for the entire region.
The much needed new station represents a raft of innovative improvements to the busiest station in the centre of the UK:
- Increased passenger capacity to more than 52 million people per year
- Brighter, cleaner and clearer platforms will be accessed via 42 new escalators and 14 new lifts
- The new concourse will be more than three times larger than the current at 10,500 square metres
- The new station will feature an atrium roof constructed from the same material as the Eden Project in Cornwall
- There will be new, comfortable, airport-style waiting lounges for passengers
- There will be direct access to the Bull Ring and improved pedestrian links to Moor Street station on the other side of the city
- The regeneration is expected to create thousands of new jobs in the area
After an international design competition that saw some of the world's best known architects pitch their vision for the future of Birmingham New Street station, Foreign Office Architects was selected to create visionary concept designs. The practice will join Mace Group and WS Atkins as part of an integrated delivery team for the project which is being funded by Network Rail, Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands and Centro (the region's passenger transport authority). Principal architect Alejandro Zaera-Polo said: "We are proud to work on such an important project and I look forward to being part of the integrated team which takes this vital scheme from concept to reality".
As delivery partner, Mace is part of an integrated project team (IPT) incorporating the lead designer Atkins, concept architect Foreign Office Architects and Network Rail.
Mace Group's regional director Rob Ewen said: "Mace is delighted to have been appointed on the Birmingham Gateway project. It's an exciting and prestigious scheme and one for which we are truly proud to be playing an integral part. Birmingham New Street is one of the largest and busiest rail stations in the UK and Birmingham is deserving of a world class facility right at the heart of the city."
