Mace achieves first phase completion for HCC

Mace has completed the first milestone of a major office refurbishment at Ashburton Court for Hampshire County Council (HCC). The new headquarters building is intended to act as a catalyst for business transformation by incorporating new ways of working and flexible office space. Phase one has been successfully delivered both on time and on budget.

The project scope involves the strip back to shell and core of Ashburton Court, a 1960s concrete framed office building. Phase one centres on East Block and was completed on 18th January 2008. Almost before the ink was dry on the PC certificate, lorries arrived at the door loaded with crates of files from new occupier, the 260-strong Children's Services team. More than 3,000 crates were delivered during the weekend of 19th/20th January allowing support staff to move in on 21st January. The whole building was occupied in a business as usual mode by 22nd January.

In order to ensure all staff were in the right place at the right time, a move management team from Macro has overseen a further 750 enabling staff moves over the last 12 months.

Further phases are due for completion in 2009 and include two more office buildings with a further 905 staff moves, a new data centre, central reception, café, conference facilities and a new auditorium.

The Ashburton Court refurbishment project will be one of the first of its kind delivering a large, urban, naturally ventilated and low carbon office building. Operational carbon emissions are being reduced from an assessed 90kg CO2/m2/annum to a target performance of 39kg CO2/m2/annum.The building will be largely powered by a renewable energy source, namely the wind driven natural ventilation system. As such, this is not only the biggest and most complex project undertaken for HCC; it is also a demonstration project for the South East Centre of Excellence (SECE).

This project is also a benchmark for cross selling within the Mace Group with services being delivered by the public sector project management team, Mace Sustain, Macro and Mace IT.
