Como project receives "Excellent" environmental rating

Como's work on the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) extension project for Wellcome Trust has been awarded an excellent BREEAM rating which is the highest environmental recognition possible.

BREEAM is the UK’s most widely used environmental assessment method for buidings and sets the standard for best practice in sustainable development. Buildings are assessed against a set of criteria and provides an overall score which will falls within a band providing either a pass, good, very good or excellent rating.

The scheme designed by NBBJ architects, comprised of the construction of a two storey extension building in-situ concrete frame with curtain wall cladding, as single storey glazed link corridor to the existing building, refurbishment of the existing building and landscaping around the buildings.

Examples of initiatives taken on site which helped secure the rating are:

  • Monitoring site waste and power usage
  • Measuring waste recycling and recycling streams
  • Copper screening for solar shading incorporated into the design
  • Film application on windows
  • Installation of bike sheds as part of the ‘environment travel plan’
  • 'Green' chillers
  • Use of sustainable timber

This is not the first time that a Como project has been awarded a commendable environmental rating. In 2007, Como completed a project for The Attorney General’s Office. One of the client objectives was to achieve a good BREEAM rating and the project team made every effort to incorporate sustainable materials and methods during design and construction, finally achieving a very good rating, no mean feat for a refurbished building.
