Royal Shakespeare Theatre crowned again | Mace
The Royal Shakespeare Theatre Transformation Project has been named as the refurbishment project of the year at the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence awards (WMCCE). Mace provided construction management and construction delivery on the project.
The judges claimed that the project “represented a substantial legacy for the region and a best practice exemplar for the industry”.
They continued to say that “the project team succeeded in delivering a bold, visually rich technically complex building in a significant historic location for a high profile cultural client on time and on budget. It takes dedication, experience and vision to create a theatre that captures the public imagination. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre does just this, and so truly deserves the accolade of Project of the Year.”
Finally, it was recognised that the project was “achieved through teamwork, strong design ethos and good management”.
The WMCCE award is just the last in a long line of accolades the project has received from the industry including winning the Project of the Year at this year's Building Awards. The project has also received great acclaim from the who's who of the arts and culture world since its official opening in November 2010. Dame Judi Dench said: “As someone who has played all the RSC’s theatres, it seems to me that what the RSC has found is a brilliant way of retaining the best of the original building while constructing a new theatre which will work wonderfully for actors and audiences alike. We have created a theatre in Stratford that Shakespeare could walk into and recognise as a playhouse for his work. It’s a spectacular idea.”
