2. CR and Our Environment

Site Search:

CR and our environmentThe emergence of climate change, greenhouse gas emissions and damage to our ecosystems and natural resources have been common political and social problems for several years now. The publication of the Stern Report makes it clear that we cannot continue to use energy and resources in the current manner without significant changes to sea levels, temperature, air quality and habitats.

Mace Group has for many years taken steps to minimise our environmental impact throughout our operations, and our Environmental Management System (EMS) and Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) policies have reduced the effect of our activities to a considerable degree. However, we know in this area we must do more if we are to contribute effectively to the national and global sustainable development movement.

Office operations
Each Mace office has a CR co-ordinator who is tasked with driving environmental improvements. In the UK, we have worked with The Carbon Neutral Company to provide an analysis of existing energy consumption in our London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Edinburgh offices, together with a range of energy-saving ideas and tools to reduce our overall carbon footprint. In 2008 we plan to extend the measurement across the remainder of our UK office operations. We have committed to reduce our carbon footprint per capita by 10% by 2010, and to reduce water consumption by 5%.

Recycling now, constructively
Ethos recycling
It is an unavoidable fact that the nature of our business demands a high use of energy and fuel, and has a direct impact on local environments. But Mace seeks to make a difference through the managed minimisation of these impacts, ensuring that we have procedures in place to ensure we are at the forefront of sustainable working practices and responsible operations.

We have formed a partnership with Ethos Recycling Ltd, a company with an unrivalled reputation in the UK recycling market, who provide an integrated waste management service. The partnership involves removing and recycling construction waste from all Mace sites, to an agreed service level of 88% - more than double the figure achieved last year.

New construction processes

Mace has been at the forefront of the industry's efforts around sustainable design, and we use existing standard tools, such as BREEAM, to ensure our projects consider their effect on the environment at the earliest stage, and maintain this focus through procurement, construction, refurbishment, maintenance and post-occupancy phases.

At Mace we are acutely aware of our responsibilities in climate change terms. While we will always use energy, we are determined to find more sustainable methods of procuring and using the energy we need to manage our businesses and services, and ensure that we contribute fully to the wider environmental cause.
